Autumn; I am so ready for it. With my favorite season of the year comes school supplies filling store aisles (“I would send you a bouquet of newly sharpened pencils…” — perhaps my favorite line from You’ve Got Mail), the return of Starbucks’s Pumpkin Spice Latte (coming to one of seven locations near you early this year!), and most importantly, the beginnings of the fall seasons of all of my favorite shows.
Unless, of course, you’re Downton Abbey, and you don’t premiere in the U.S. until January… Fall also begins my hiatus from Googling anything about Downton, any of its actors, any of its former actors, Julian Fellowes, basically any topics that could potentially, maybe, possibly contain spoilers.
Although it’s strange for me to be going into a fall TV season without How I Met Your Mother to look forward to, I am super excited for plenty of other shows, both new and returning, that will no doubt keep me busy this year. Here are the seven fall 2014 tv shows that I am eager to start watching over the next two months.
Oh, and if you aren’t all caught up on these shows, watch out for SPOILERS below!
1. Doctor Who – Saturday, August 23 @ 7:50 pm
Although I am a fairly new Whovian (a Newvian?), I am still appropriately excited for the new season and the new Doctor. My Who career began with the introduction of Matt Smith, and I went backwards from there to Christopher Eccleston and David Tennant, so this is my very first “meeting the new Doctor” experience. I don’t know how I’ll handle it, especially since I’ve become used to seeing Peter Capaldi as Cardinal Richelieu in BBC’s The Musketeers (which is another fantastic show that you should also watch), but I’m excited nonetheless. We’ve certainly waited long enough for a new season of Who.
2. New Girl – Tuesday, September 16
I started watching this show accidentally. I was living in the sorority house when it first premiered after Glee (has everyone had the outgrowing Glee experience, or was that just me?). When my choices were 1. go up to my room and finish my classwork, or 2. stay with my sisters and watch the new show with everyone’s favorite quirky girl Zooey Deschanel, can you guess which one I chose? I immediately loved the ensemble cast vibe that always works so well (i.e. Friends, How I Met Your Mother), and each season has mixed it up just enough to keep it fresh. Bringing Coach back? Complete game changer.
3. The Blacklist – Monday, September 22 @ 10 pm
This one is Spencer’s favorite of the bunch. Actually, it might be the only one that he would willingly watch with me. However, that doesn’t mean it’s a “guy’s show.” There’s so much to keep you coming back each week, and I always tell Spencer that the episode leaves me with ten more questions than I had at the end of the previous one. All the drama — betrayal, love, death, secrecy — plus the “cop show” elements make The Blacklist a show that I will not be missing this year!
4. Saturday Night Live – Saturday, September 27 @ 11:30 pm
40 years of SNL… just take a moment to let that sink in. It’s had a run that is almost twice as long as the amount of I’ve been on this earth, and its ability to reinvent itself is why I find myself loving certain seasons and not being able to stand others. I personally love watching the shows that have occurred in my lifetime, especially the twenty-first century ones: the digital shorts; the cast members; the Weekend Update; so many laughs. I’m eager to see what celebrity guests we’ll get to laugh with (and at) this season!
5. Once Upon a Time – Sunday, September 28 @ 8 pm
Once is a show that I’ve always watched with friends, so it’ll be a little different experiencing the trials and tribulations of Charming and Snow without a room full of estrogen and pints of Ben and Jerry’s. Of course, I ship everyone’s favorite couple: Hook & Emma 4eva! I’m a little surprised each season with how they completely reinvent the world in which these fairytale characters live, and I can say that I am extremely excited to meet the people from Frozen!
6. A to Z – Thursday, October 2 @ 9:30 pm
Okay, I’ll be completely honest with you… I don’t know much about NBC’s new show, A to Z. The thing I do know is that Cristin Milioti is in it, and that’s enough for me! I, along with the rest of the country, fell in love with her during the final season of How I Met Your Mother (can you tell that I’m having withdrawals? Nine years is a huge chunk of a person’s life, okay?). Also, I did a little snooping, and it seems that each of the 26 episodes will focus on one letter of the alphabet as it pertains to Andrew and Zelda’s relationship, and the English major in me just loves that.
7. The Walking Dead – Sunday, October 12 @ 9 pm
I joined the Walking Dead bandwagon a little late. As in, Spencer and I started and finished watching the previous four seasons this past June. I’ll admit that there were a few moments when the show dragged a bit, but that might have been because we watched so many episodes in so little time. Either way, the fourth season was pretty solid (thank God they finally left that prison!) and that cliffhanger in Terminus? Fantastic. There’s no way I’m not watching this season’s walker-filled hijinks!
What are you most excited to see this fall? Any new shows that I should check out?
