It’s the end of the longest work week that ever was, and I’m just glad to be going home for the weekend. That’s right; this time tomorrow, we will be in good ole Rome, Georgia, and I was never more excited for it in my life! So, to psych myself up even more, here is a list of all the things that I miss about the Peach State.
-
Getting to watch all of the Braves games throughout the week on regular tv
-
The gorgeous old houses with wraparound front porches and big white columns
-
The (not so) friendly rivalry between the Georgia Bulldogs and my Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets
-
Being mere hours from the plethora of beaches that dot Florida
-
High school football games that are better attended than my college games were
-
Knowing you’re never far from a Waffle House
-
Little old ladies with Southern drawls who pray on Sundays and gossip all the others
-
The words “pocketbook,” “shopping buggy,” and “lightning bug”
-
Tea so sweet you can stand a spoon in it
-
Bone Garden, Holeman and Finch, Hankook Taqueria, and all the other unique Atlanta restaurants you can’t find anywhere else
-
Never being asked “Is Pepsi okay?” when you order a Coke
-
Hometown parades and fireworks shows on the Fourth of July
-
Peaches. All the peaches.
-
My husband’s family asking me to “cut” off the lights or “cut” down the volume on the tv
-
Driving down back roads at the end of long summer days
-
The slow-paced, easy lifestyle of front porch swings and conversations over brunch
-
Succotash, boiled peanuts, and real cornbread
-
Cheap beer (and just cheap alcohol in general)
-
Genuine Southern hospitality because it’s different than being “nice”
-
The landscape — mountains, rivers, foothills, fields
-
A Frosted Orange from the Varsity
-
Terrifyingly beautiful summer thunderstorms that rattle the windows and slam the shutters
-
Backyard get-togethers with family and friends
-
Cornhole tournaments that are way more competitive than they should be!
-
And most importantly, I miss being close to my family and the place where I grew up.
I guess you could say Georgia’s on my mind! (C’mon, you had to have seen that one coming.)
Do you ever get crazy nostalgic for your hometown?
P.S. I’m also pretty fond of our new home: Cincinnati.
