Happy New Year! The first month of a brand new year is always dedicated to the promise of the next 366 days (yay, leap year!), so I figure I’m not too badly behind to share my thoughts about 2016. I also imagined it would be a good time to jump back into this whole blogging thing after months away, but we won’t get into that. (Feel free to read all sorts of excuses in my October “finally getting back into blogging again” post.)
Spencer and I spent the New Year in Cincy with friends who came all the way up from Georgia to see us, and the time we spent together made me realize 1) I dearly miss all of our peeps from home, and 2) we really need some “couple” friends. But that’s a post for another day…
As the four of us enjoyed a fabulous meal at McCormick and Schmick’s right off of Fountain Square — because we go fancy for NYE — the topic turned to the holiday at hand. Kelsey announced that it was her favorite of the year, and when the waitress brought out four flutes of champagne for toasting, I was tempted to agree. I love New Year’s Eve for the parties, the gathering with friends, the champagne, and all of the fond, if slightly fuzzy, memories filled with excited jitters and the promise of yet-to-come.
However, I’m not a huge fan of the aftermath. It never fails that I create seemingly doable goals that get abandoned one, two, or at the very most three weeks later. This past year, I’ve learned a ton about myself and how my brain works. I have accepted that the older I get, the more I turn into my mother, which means that if something isn’t on my to-do list, it’s not getting done!
In light of this discovery, I’ve decided to shy away from more general resolutions — “Exercise more,” “Eat healthier,” “Be a better person” — and get a little specific with my goals for the year. You all know that I’m much more of a letters gal, but this list is all about the numbers!
(For anyone who’s curious, here’s the breakdown on my 36 books: 12 for Modern Mrs. Darcy’s 2016 Reading Challenge + 12 for Emma Watson’s feminist book club + 12 of my own choosing.)
So there you have it! My big ticket items for 2016. Some of them are loftier than others, but I believe each one will lend itself nicely to a fun, fulfilled twenty-fifth year of my life.
What are your “think big” resolutions for the year? Do they involve travel, food, reading?
