On the final Friday of each month, I take a look back at all the things I loved and put together this list of recommendations for you: the Friday Finale. It might include the best book I read, a particularly impressive recipe I tried, or the best thing I streamed this month. I hope these standout moments from my month inspire you to make some time for yourself looking forward!
Where did September go? I swear, time is absolutely meaningless in 2020. This month flew by. Between launching a Preptober workbook for all my fellow NaNoWriMos and reading 4 books, I don’t have much else to share! It was a chill month full of homemade lattes (more on that below) and watching the temperatures dip lower.
Fall is my favorite season, and I love how September always kicks it off in style. Keep reading for the things that brought me joy this month!
I knew the moment I saw the first preview that I would be watching Enola Holmes. The premise intrigued me: What if Sherlock Holmes had a much younger sister who was also talented in matters of deduction and observation? And then the casting got me. Millie Bobby Brown, Helena Bonham Carter, Sam Claflin… Henry Cavill as Sherlock? I see you, Netflix.
I am very pleased to report that Enola Holmes was absolutely charming. Lengendary always does quality films, and this one was no different. The settings were gorgeous, and I loved that Enola frequently broke the fourth wall. It was very girl power but not gratuitously so, and I would recommend it as a nice, easy watch that will make you smile. I’ve already put a library hold on the first installment in the book series that it’s based on!
Hi, my name is Tyler, and this Miroco milk frother has changed my coffee game for good. My parents got us an espresso machine a while back, and I was just never able to master the milk frother thing. I’d either burn the shit out of myself or spend five minutes “frothing” to be left with lukewarm milk. Baristas make it look so easy, you know?
When this little baby arrived, courtesy of my in-laws, I immediately went in search of espresso beans so I could finally make myself the café latte of my dreams. Technically, it was a birthday present, but I couldn’t really be expected to leave it in the box for three weeks. My favorite thing about this milk frother is that it is so easy to use. It has four different settings—hot, fluffy foam; hot, dense foam; heated milk; and frothed cold milk—and they all work with a touch of a button!
My Goodreads rating: ★★★★☆
I had no idea what to expect when I started reading Untamed by Glennon Doyle, but my friend Molly recommended it and that alone was enough for me to check it out from the library. I thought it was a delightful, inspiring, emotion-forward piece with a strong message for women: find your wild, authentic self and trust her.
I haven’t read Glennon’s other books, so this was my first introduction to her writing style and her life, though I did know she was married to U.S. Women’s Soccer superstar Abby Wambach before reading. (I’m not living under a rock!) Overall, I was impressed by the way she wove the different stories from her life together to create a cohesive message. And I’m always a fan of short and sweet chapters when it comes to memoir.
This book has a feeling of real and uncensored life in a way that other memoir + motivational books rarely achieve. Yes, of course there are moments that made me think “Did this really happen that way?” but I think that comes with the territory.
When I told myself I was going to add this to the Friday Finale, I thought I was kidding. Well, joke’s on me because here it is! We’ve bought this pumpkin roll from the Kroger bakery twice this month because it has the perfect ratio of pumpkin to cream cheese filling.. I eat it for breakfast, as an afternoon snack, and as dessert. They cost us $5.99 at Kroger, and I promise you it’s worth every single penny.
What’s one thing that made your September better?
