Twenty-three years ago today, my wonderful fiancé entered this world. I don’t know what time this momentous occasion took place, nor do I have any details about his first moments. I suppose guys just don’t care about the little things. What can you do?
My mother is the absolute best birthday celebrant that I have ever known. Growing up in our household, your birthday was 100% your day. You picked your birthday dinner, what kind of cake she would make for you, what you wanted to do throughout the day; it was like you became head of the family for one day. Unfortunately, the proximity of my mother’s birthday to Christmas and our lack of similar birthday celebrating skills meant she normally got a much less personalized day for her birthday. Even worse, Spencer and I have completely stolen her day this year for our wedding! But I digress…
While I’m not sure that I could ever live up to my mother’s legacy, I’m determined to try with my (very, very in the future) family, and this year has been my first real opportunity to test my skills! Don’t worry, this penguin-loving dork never, ever reads the blog, so my secret’s safe despite being splashed across the Internet. Here’s a peek into the happy birthday celebration I have planned:
7:00 am
On an average day, Spencer wakes up to me nudging him awake with a pillow. Today, however, he awoke to the smell of his favorite breakfast-y food wafting from the kitchen: Cinnabon cinnamon rolls. I picked them up yesterday afternoon at our local Cinnabon, which if Spencer had his way, we would visit at least once a week.
8:30 am – 4 pm
At this point, he’s in work mode, and I really don’t have much control over what goes on. I had planned to have a coworker go out to lunch with him, but depending on his workload that day, it could either be a blessing or a curse. Instead I’m just accepting that it’s out of my hands. Hopefully someone will wish him a happy birthday, at the very least.
6 pm
This is when I typically get home, and we go work out. But who wants to workout on their birthday? (Correct answer: no one.) So instead, he’ll probably want to stay at home and work, and I’ll have to coerce him into going to get a beer to celebrate.
7:30 pm
Benihana has this ridiculously amazing thing called The Chef’s Table, which is its “preferred member” type club that anyone can (and should) join. They update you on all the yummy new entrees and, most importantly, you get a $30 off coupon for use during your birth month! I found out about it in August when we went to celebrate my job offer, and I promptly signed us both up. So we will be dining on Rocky’s Choice with chicken fried rice for the second month in a row!
9:30 pm
No matter what some of our Georgia friends think, living in Cincinnati does have its perks. For instance, with Cincinnati comes Graeter’s, the most wonderful little ice cream shop in the world. Spencer’s favorite flavor is the black raspberry chocolate chip, and the last time we were in the store, I discovered that they have a black raspberry chocolate bliss cake filled with the stuff. Therefore, after work today, I’m planning to pick one up and somehow secret it away in our freezer until tonight. Wish me luck!
UPDATE: It seems that Grater’s ice cream cakes are a tad out of my price range. Therefore, I (semi) successfully created my own take on an ice cream cake using their ice cream for less than a third of what it would’ve cost me to buy it! If there’s any left when I get home, you can expect a post about it in the future!
Is my proposed plan as great as one of my mom’s birthdays? Probably not, but I’m just beginning to perfect my craft. One thing that I will say is that Spencer can look forward to many more fun-filled birthdays in the future!
How do you celebrate birthdays? Do they tend to be low-key, or do you pull out all the stops?
