Let me begin by saying that I have been a consistent viewer of yours for over three years. Once Upon a Time is a work of genius, and I never miss an episode. However, I will say that at times I’ve wondered if it’s my insane love of Disney coupled with an inability to quit anything that kept me watching during a few of those midseason episodes (cough weeks and weeks in Neverland cough).
But, dear ABC, you have more than made up for any past digressions with one of this year’s additions to the weekly lineup. No, it wasn’t the show that I was excited for all summer, and it also isn’t the one with everyone’s favorite companion (although Selfie already has its own place in my Hulu Plus queue). I’m talking about the show that I didn’t hear a peep about until a week into the fall season: Manhattan Love Story.
I am obsessed. Seriously, I do not remember the last time I was so excited about a new show. The casting is fantastic (who doesn’t love Analeigh Tipton?!), the storyline is such a unique take on an arguably overdone concept, and every episode has such a wonderful, lighthearted quality to it that makes me wish it lasted an extra thirty minutes each week.
Most of all, ABC, I commend you for the use of voice-over throughout the episodes. Every loves voice-over; there’s something incomparable about getting to hear a character’s inner thoughts. It’s really as close as television gets to emulating literature. But, and this is a huge but, voice-over is hard to get right. It can easily sound forced, completely out of sync with the character’s actions, or just plain stupid, and never ever but never have I felt that any of the lines in Manhattan Love Story were anything but perfectly crafted bits of perfection.
Basically, I needed to write this open letter to 1) let ABC know how excited this show has made me, and 2) entice my fellow Internet users to watch Manhattan Love Story. While I have no doubt that anyone would enjoy this show, my motives are entirely selfish. I don’t think I would be able to handle it if Manhattan Love Story didn’t make it to enchant me for another year.
So maybe give this one a few more ad spots, okay, ABC? You’ve got a real winner here.
