There are all sorts of crazy wedding traditions out there, and I have to admit that I’m incorporating a few of them into my wedding tomorrow! Today, since I’m running around like crazy while also trying to take in every moment that I have left with my last name, I’m going to do a quick run down on how I’m interpreting one of the most well-known wedding traditions around, the one that I named this series after!
Chances are you’ve heard some of the words, but have you ever read the entire verse?
Something Olde, Something New, Something Borrowed, Something Blue, and A Sixpence in Her Shoe
It’s an old British custom from the Victorian era that many still observe today… minus the whole sixpence thing. Old new borrowed blue… Friends nodded to it when Monica and Chandler were planning to get married in Vegas, Doctor Who took the simple rhyme and ran with it, and countless movies have highlighted it as the most quintessential of wedding traditions. While it’s not going to be a huge part of my wedding day, I am going to make sure to have each component of the verse with me at different parts of the day.
Something Old… the diamonds in my engagement ring.
They came from the engagement ring of Spencer’s grandmother, and besides the fact that they are gorgeous (and so is my ring!), I could not feel more blessed to carry around a piece of someone who was so important to my fiancé and his family.
Something New… my wedding dress.
I seriously almost wore my mother’s wedding dress. It has the most amazing lace sleeves, and it fit her like a glove, but it still looked a little too 80’s wedding to me. Therefore, I bought a new one at David’s Bridal and had them line and attach custom lace cap sleeves to it. Like mother, like daughter!
Something Borrowed… my grandmothers’ engagement rings.
Although it won’t be the same as having them there with me on the big day, it is so important that I have something to remind me of my grandmothers. So my florists and I hatched up a plan: I will have their rings built into my bouquet, meaning all I have to do is look down to remember that they’ll be looking down on us tomorrow.
Something Blue… the ribbon on my garter.
That’s right, there will be a garter. However, if you read this little post about feminism and wedding planning, you know all about my qualms with this interesting tradition of ours. I know you’re going to shake your head and think I’m so weird, but I will be wearing a garter on my wedding day… I just won’t have my husband take it off and throw it at a crowd of our dearest male friends.
Oh, c’mon. We’d already purchased it, I needed a blue something, and I’ve never worn a garter before! I want the full bridal experience after all.
Wish me luck, you guys! Here’s hoping I won’t trip on my way down the aisle. Also, did you follow this silly but fun rhyme when planning your wedding?
