Can I just start off by saying how excited I am to write this post? The blog has been pretty wedding heavy lately, so, without further ado, now for something completely different…
With all of the planning, traveling, worrying, it feels a bit like the wedding has taken over December. Our apartment never got trimmed for the season, and I still haven’t been able to find my favorite holiday sweater. However, the weekend before our wedding, Spencer and I attended our first holiday party of the year, and we had such a blast. And a festive blast, at that!
Not being from the area, it’s normal for us to hear about a restaurant or other location in Cincinnati and be clueless. So imagine my surprise when I told my coworkers about The Littlefield and only got blank stares! Maybe I’m getting the hang of this place after all. Or maybe it’s because it’s relatively new to the area…
Either way, The Littlefield is this great little bourbon bar outside of downtown where Spencer’s company had their holiday cocktail party. The decor was simple but upscale, the food was delicious and inventive (brown butter Rice Krispie treats?!), and of course, the bourbon cocktails were the best part of the whole night.
I’m a fan of bourbon in that I tend to like all of your traditional bourbon mixers, which leave just enough of the bourbon taste for me to appreciate it. Spencer, on the other hand, is a bourbon (and whiskey, in general) nut. The great thing about The Littlefield is that they only carry the good stuff, meaning even when my cocktail was a little stronger than I would’ve made it for myself, I could still enjoy it.
For instance, my first drink of the night (we got two free for bringing in toys for a holiday drive) was called a Fleur de Bee.
1. I love prosecco, and
2. Fleur de lis are just about my favorite symbols/emblems in the world.
Despite these relatively silly reasons for choosing a drink, I absolutely loved the Fleur de Bee. It also had Violette, St Germaine, and a hibiscus flower soaking in the center! And although Spencer dared me to, I did not eat it upon finishing my drink.
My second drink is the main reason why we will be returning to The Littlefield. It was called Grandma’s Fur Coat, which may not be the most appetizing name in the world, but damn was it good. And holiday themed! (Are you sensing a trend?) Bourbon, egg nog, spiced rum, creme de cacao, and coffee sprinkles — throw ’em together, and they make for a wonderful concoction.
My favorite part of drinking it was knowing that a portion of the proceeds from the drink would go to a local community organization. Because besides being swanky and hip and superb at what they do, The Littlefield gives back to the Cincinnati community in a major way, and what’s more holiday-spirited than that?
Anyone traveling to the Cincinnati area should definitely check out The Littlefield. Giving back is good for the soul… and so is bourbon!
P.S. We also did the Kentucky Bourbon Trail if you’re looking for more ways to get your booze on.
