Alright, friends. We’re switching things up a bit this week. Spencer and I are officially on the most needed vacation that ever was, and as such my brain has been in full lazy mode. I have to admit that I haven’t yet finished The Count of Monte Cristo but not for lack of trying — this novel is a beast! I’m giving myself a few extra days, so you will hopefully have an introduction to Alexandre Dumas complete with all my questions about the Count on Wednesday and then a full review on Friday. I hope some of you will join me in the book club discussion!
Instead of a book club post, I decided to semi-copy my Week-At-A-Glance from the last time my life was too busy to stick to an editorial calendar. Here’s my Weekend-At-A-Glance because despite being a forty-eight hour period, it was packed full of surprisingly significant moments.
1. If you’ve read my post on giving your workspace some personality, you’ll probably recognize this desk. Well with a heavy heart, I have to say that it is no longer mine. But don’t worry, I still have my awesome job in the same department with people that I love working with; we’re just moving down three floors. (It was still difficult to pack it all up and think about someone else sitting there!)
2. On Friday evening, I had the opportunity to attend a happy hour and learn more about an organization that is doing such amazing things for underprivileged youth in Cincinnati — WordPlay! Earlier this week I heard some staggering statistics about children in Cincinnati and the poverty that they struggle through to try to gain an education. WordPlay provides tutoring, literacy programs, and creative writing experiences for these kids, and they’re already making an impact. I hope to be able to lend my own time and talents to WordPlay soon!
3. I don’t have a great photo for this one, but it was such a meaningful moment that I just had to share. On Saturday afternoon, Zoey alerted us to a tiny fawn that had gotten itself stuck on the wrong side of the fence that separates our apartment complex from the woods. We watched him for about fifteen minutes until he looked so hopeless that I convinced Spencer that we had to go outside and see if we could do anything for him. When we got there, he was lying in a puddle with the saddest look on his face, and we soon realized that there was no other way through the fence than over it. Spencer hopped the fence, I held the little guy up to him, and he made it over to his mother. It was the most wonderful thing, and I wish I’d taken a picture of his precious face when he realized he was safe on the right side of the fence!
4. Spencer got tickets to the Dayton Air Show through work, which meant we spent all day Sunday watching the coolest aerobatics acts in the world. We even got to see the Breitling Jet Team in its first tour of the United States, and they were probably my favorite act of the day. I have a wicked sunburn now, but assuming it goes away in the next day or so, the trip will have been completely worth it.
And that’s my weekend! You’ll have to wish me luck because we head out for the Kentucky Bourbon Trail tomorrow with Spencer’s parents, and we hope to do the whole trail (with all nine distilleries) in three days.
Did you have any surprisingly meaningful moments this weekend? I just had to share mine!
